Angela Hayson

12. Angela Hayson, Shifting Persona 1, 2023, woodblock, carborundum print, monoprint, collage on Japanese kozo on archival rag paper backing, 45 x 38 cm, 60 x 53 cm (framed). $1500

Shifting Persona 1 (2023) explores the tension between personal and public personas in social encounters. Faceless, figurative motifs in diverse configurations are used to symbolise flux in self- presentation; adjustments to the authentic self to make a desired impression upon others. This adjustment of appearances could be likened to that of a performance, or the wearing of a mask to conceal one self’s true nature.

The work is concerned with interaction within a group, the awareness of one’s individuality and separateness from others explored through multiple print processes. The notion of home as a symbol of belonging in a particular place is a recurring motif in my work. The layering and juxtaposition of print-based kozo papers is used to suggest negotiations and considerations in the routine of fashioning the self.

Angela Hayson’s multi-disciplinary art practice is informed by her interest in observational perception in social encounters. Her work is focused on the concept of dual identities, whereby individuals preserve their core identity to remain authentic to self and at the same time make adjustments in how they present in social situations. Her works are realised through printmaking, drawing, painting and sculpture.

Hayson has received significant art commissions and exhibited nationally and internationally with work held in private and public collections in Australia, NZ, Korea, China, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Europe, South Africa and USA.

Hayson lives and works in Sydney and has exhibited nationally and internationally since 2005 with work held in private and public collections. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Art with Honors from the National Art School, Sydney, 2005 and received Master of Art from UNSW Art & Design, 2010.
