Harriett Clark

Harriett Clark is an emerging Sydney-based artist. In 2021, she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at UNSW Art and Design where she majored in Printmaking. Clark's creative practice consists of a collection of documentations and recordings of the self within the everyday. An examination of how mark-making and gesture can bring a consciousness and presence into the here and now which one is consumed by. Clark achieves this through an experimentative approach to printmaking and painting, where she records herself and surroundings through the immediate mark, therefore situating the self within the temporal present, and thus pondering the complex interaction of the self and mind within the space which it consumes.

#11 | Traversing the here and now, 2021, oil based monotypes, series of 26 works (part shown), 57 x 77 cm each.

Traversing the here and now presents a collection of monotypes which document and record the self within the now. The now being that precise second of passing time which is captured through a mark or gesture, creating an embodiment of a moment.

This series began as part of an examination of how a practice of mark-making and recording can both document and situate oneself within the here and now.

This research and practice came about through the realisation that the action of art making for me was a refuge and escape from the chaos of the current modern culture surrounding and overwhelming me. The constant rush and urgency in the everyday was stilled and calmed when in the studio. Mimicking the pace when submerged in nature, the action of mark-making evokes this slowing. A concentration of the insignificant movements and happenings around me, which are continuous and constant without the interference of self, allowed for this escape. From this comes the meditative state of the self within this space. A sensory engagement of the components of the everyday which go by unnoticed.
