Exhibition: Edition Four

Underpinned by parallels and polarities, Edition Four explored the dynamic malleability of contemporary printmaking practice and its interdisciplinary nature, inviting 15 artists to submit a work representative of their current practice. Featuring a multifarious offering of etching, linocut, lithography, serigraphy, risography and monoprinting, the exhibition substantiated the versatility of print-related media and its positioning in both focused and cross-disciplinary practices. Experimentation as a methodology was at the nucleus of the exhibition, taut in tension with what is often considered to be a traditional medium that actively opposes the unconventional. The selected works pushed these boundaries and explored in an expansive approach, the potential of a process-driven medium, challenging processes rooted in tradition towards unorthodox outputs, uncommon material exploration, and spatial activation. Although disparate, there was a sense of connectedness amongst the works, not through a linear inheritance or palpable relationship, but through a sharing of knowledge and processes, rooted (and uprooted) from a medium bound in history.
There were intersections of conceptual practice within the exhibition, including explorations of our environments, realities, interior and exterior spaces; temporality, history and memory, the human and gendered condition; the self and others; and exploration of materiality.
