Amy Wong

Amy Wong is an emerging artist who lives and works in Western Sydney on unceded Darug land. She creates characters and stories within imaginative and natural landscapes through a multidisciplinary practice encompassing painting, clay, and digital illustration. Wong explores the people, nostalgia, and joys of everyday life while promoting the beauty of the natural world. Her deep care for land is mirrored in her pursuit of a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) at the University of New South Wales, with a major in Ecology.

Wong is currently a resident studio artist at Bankstown Incubate Artist Studios with More Than Reproduction (March-April 2022) where she explores her connection with her Vietnamese family through an edition of monotypes. She is also the main illustrator for Outload Arts’ UNITY Project (2022) where she illustrates a series of educational resources to teach primary school girls about healthy relationships, consent, and positive body image.

#8 | Me & Mum, oil monotype on BFK Rives, 28 x 38 cm, $200.

Me & Mum (2022) is the first of nine oil monotypes Wong created for an edition as part of her residency with More Than Reproduction at Bankstown Incubate Artist Studios in March-April 2022. The work depicts a moment in the artist’s childhood where she bonds with her mother over lunch.

The elaborate brushstrokes exhibit Wong’s first explorations of monotyping. The excessive use of solvent in some areas and drying of the paper resulted in streaks of white where pigment was not absorbed. Furthermore, she misaligned her plate, producing an off-centred print. With iterations of her technique, subsequent monotypes had greater vibrancy and clarity in the image.

While not favoured in the final edition, the brushwork captures the afternoon sunset bathing the room. It paints a memory that is faint, yet deeply cherished in the mind of the artist as she reflects on her loving relationship with her mother.
