Kate Webster

Kate Webster is an emerging contemporary artist,  whose work is an introspective examination into the obscure processes of memory. By choosing to focus on, not what has been deemed important enough to remember, but what has been disremembered, she explores the edges of unconscious reminiscence. Her practice is deeply personal,  employing objects and family photographs that she has collected over her lifetime that denote an embodied form of the human experience, her work establishes a unique framework to evoke memory in a way that cannot be vocalised. As an artist, Kate plays with the category of collection, positioning herself as archivist and curator by arranging personal objects that have a fleeting presence, establishing a blurred relationship between herself, the work, and the viewer. Kate lives and works on the lands of the Gadigal people of the  Eora Nation/Sydney.

#4 | Soot, 2019, screen print on paper, 25 x 55 cm, $250.

When I was first learning to screen print, one of the biggest hurdles I encountered was attempting to print large areas of solid ink. This print was almost perfect until I tried to print the right hand side of the image. Time after time the paper was sticking to the screen or the ink was leeching outside of the square. To this day it frustrates me to no end and I'm unsure if it is something I will ever master but I have no doubt that I will persevere until I do.
