Teeya Ryan, RE: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, 2025, performance installation, 120gsm Fabriano Accademia paper, ink, receipt spike, 75 x 75cm.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN (2024) was a culmination of my artistic education, material interests and theoretical concerns that I have investigated and inquired across the three years of my degree. In combination with these three elements is the primary message, or rather question, that underpins the work: what the fuck do I do now? Re: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN (2025) is a work in response to this initial question, six months following my graduate exhibition, faced with the minimal options printmakers have: further my studies or move into a workforce that primarily consists of unpaid labour, excessive self-promotion and consistently unsuccessful grant proposals. These elements of the art world are the driving forces for the creation of this work, positioning myself as the desperate artist constantly labouring over new cover letters and begging for work. Give me a job!!!

Teeya Ryan is an emerging Australian artist, born and raised in Cairns (Gimuy) and now based in Sydney (Gadigal Country). Her practice navigates the space between the studio and the gallery, blending print/making with performance to explore the physicality and labour of artistic production. With a focus on how the body functions as both subject and tool, Ryan stages performances that are physically demanding and conceptually rich, inviting audiences to witness and share in the print/making process. Her work challenges traditional boundaries, encouraging a reconsideration of what print/making and the notion of works on paper can be in a contemporary context. Currently completing her Honours thesis in English, Ryan continues to exhibit and experiment with her performance-based work. She has received scholarships such ‘The Jerome de Costa Memorial Undergraduate Award’ and the ‘Zelda Stedman Artist Scholarship’ while studying at Sydney College of the Arts.
